In contrast, commercially-raised pork tends to be leaner, milder in flavor, and often less tender due to controlled, high-efficiency farming practices. Heritage-bred pork also aligns with ethical and environmental considerations, making it a preferred choice for quality-conscious consumers.

  • Farm-raised heritage-bred pork offers superior quality compared to commercially-raised pork, with richer, more complex flavors, better marbling, and a juicier, more tender texture. The meat is often a deeper red color, reflecting its higher fat content and varied diet. Heritage breeds are raised in more natural, humane environments, allowing them to develop fuller flavors and a softer, more flavorful fat.

In contrast, commercially-raised pork tends to be leaner, milder in flavor, and often less tender due to controlled, high-efficiency farming practices. Heritage-bred pork also aligns with ethical and environmental considerations, making it a preferred choice for quality-conscious consumers.

  • Our pasture-raised cows graze on open pastures, eating a natural diet of grass for most or all of their lives. These cattle live in more natural environments with plenty of space to roam, which can lead to healthier animals and a leaner meat with a distinct, grass-fed flavor. Pasture-raised beef typically has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. We do not give our livestock antibiotics or hormones and raise them in an environmentally sustainable environment.

Commercially raised beef, on the other hand, is produced in confined feedlots where cattle are fed a grain-based diet to fatten them up quickly. This method allows for more rapid and cost-effective production, resulting in tender, marbled meat, but with a higher content of omega-6 fatty acids. Antibiotics and hormones are more commonly used in this system to promote growth and prevent disease in the crowded conditions. While more affordable and widely available, commercially raised beef generally has a larger environmental impact due to intensive farming practices.

Sustainability is at the core of Peculiar Pig Farm’s mission. Our pigs roam freely, foraging on natural acorns and consuming an all-natural, locally sourced heirloom grain feed.

As a traditional woodlot farm, we practice rotational grazing to promote soil health, reduce environmental impact, and ensure animal well-being. This regenerative approach creates high-quality pork while preserving the land for future generations.

RAISED

Marvin C. Ross, a fifth-generation farmer and the owner of Peculiar Pig Farm, has been running his family-owned heritage hog and livestock farm for the past 14 years.

The farm is situated on an 12-acre parcel of land that his Grandfather once farmed on in Dorchester, South Carolina.

Marvin and his brother Jada, the Farm Lead, use sustainable farming practices, including planting cover crops to utilize the manure left by their livestock. They purchase grains from local farmers, further supporting the local economy.

THE FARMERS

“We put a lot of respect into where and how the animals are living and use humane practices. Livestock roam in a woodlot, just like they did with my grandfather.”
